Solo and Ensemble Festival

2020 Solo/Small Ensemble Festival
Saturday, February 29, 2020  Humboldt State University

Site Host: Naomi Powell   naomip@hma.edu
Chair: Holly MacDonell

Who: For music students interested in performing a vocal, string, woodwind, brass, or percussion solo, duet, trio, quartet, or ensemble.

Why: Solo & Ensemble is an excellent chamber music opportunity for students to enhance musicianship, work together to make memorable music experiences, learn more about different music periods and styles, and be objectively evaluated by music professionals. Students receive feedback from an adjudicator and a rating. Students receiving Superior rating can be eligible to perform at the State Solo & Ensemble Festival.

How: Fill out an application and an invoice for the Solo & Ensemble Festival. (You’ll also need the appropriate adjudication form for the day of the festival.) These forms can be downloaded at: northcoastcmea.com/forms/

Send the application, invoice, and fee to:
NC CMEA PO BOX 2043 McKinleyville, CA 95519

Cost: Solos: $20.00

All other entries: $25.00 per group

Music: The selection of music to be performed is left to the performers and their teachers.  Your music teacher can suggest one or more selections appropriate for your ability; performers may propose their own choices to their teacher. The solo part, or the score of an ensemble, must be supplied to the adjudicator and picked up after the performance. Students not performing by memory will need additional copies of their parts for themselves.

Accompanists? Having an accompanist is not necessary, but it may enhance a performance. You may supply your own accompanist, or one may be available at the festival. There is a $15 fee for using a festival accompanist. There is a short warm up time provided, but if an additional rehearsal with the accompanist is needed, it will need to be scheduled by the applicant, and the fee becomes $25. All sheet music for accompanists needs to be provided at least two weeks prior to the festival.

Where: Music Buildings at Humboldt State University

Once your entry is confirmed, make sure you have the entire festival time cleared. We will give you your exact time within two weeks of the festival. *Schedule changes cannot be made for scheduling conflicts of either musician or accompanist. Please plan accordingly!
